Load Balancing

A load balancer sits between clients and a pool of application servers. It chooses where each request should go using rules such as round robin, least connections, or health checks. This prevents one server from becoming a hotspot and lets operators add or remove instances without changing the public address. It is a traffic director, not a replacement for capacity planning.

Key idea

One stable entry point can spread work and stop sending traffic to unhealthy instances.

Real-world example

When a shopping site adds servers for a sale, the load balancer sends new browser requests across the pool. If one server fails its health check, it is removed from rotation.
