Monolithic Architecture

A monolith packages an application's user interface, business rules, and data access into one deployable unit. It is often the fastest way to start because local calls are simple and one team can understand the whole product. Its shape is not automatically bad; the challenge appears when one change requires rebuilding, testing, and deploying everything.

Key idea

One deployment does not mean messy code. A modular monolith can keep boundaries inside one process.

Real-world example

An early online shop might serve catalog, cart, checkout, and admin from one application connected to one database. A small team can ship it quickly and debug it in one place.
